Got time for the cats??
Funding and public opinion are always concerns when working to take care of our four footed friends. But just as important is to have volunteers to take care of the many needs of these defenseless animals.
There are so many ways you can help these little friends:
- Care for a Colony: The colonies needs to be fed and watered and looked after as you would your own four legged children to maintain the health of your extended family.
- Become a Foster: Take in a young feral and litter box train it, spend time with it and socialize it. Help it learn all the things that will make their new family better appreciate and love the new baby.
Some cats, generally those that are older cannot be socialized and therefore are returned to their colony after being neutered, tested for disease and being given rabies and other medications as needed to be allowed to live out their life in safety under the supervision of a volunteer caretaker.
- Help with Trap~Neuter~Release~Manage: This is probably one of the more physically demanding activities and one should be in good health before tackling this task.
This entails helping trap the cats of a colony and taking them to a participating veteranarian to have them neutered/spayed, given proper medical exam and care, Return those that cannot be socialized to their own colony and manage their on-going care.
- Work the Adoptathons: Spend an afternoon in the company of the cats and cat people helping the cats find and learn about their potential new parents and putting them in a good home.
Bringing a new cat into the home is not something to be taken lightly, this should be a committment for the life of the cat.
- With the need to document everything we have a need for administrative help familiar with Word, Quicken and Excel
- Are you a competent grant writer? It takes money to have the ferals neutered and spayed, tested for disease, given medicines, Rabies shots.
There is also the additional expense and labor of building of shelters, feeders, and other necessary items once the ferals are returned to their colony.
- Can you write news articles? Public relations is a very important tool to any organization that desires public support and donations forwarding its activities, and making the goals and activities better understood and appreciated by a larger segment of the populance.
- Would you like to advocate for the cats in public forum? Education can be a powerful tool to moving individuals and groups to effect change. Passionate speakers with a positive message can be very effective.
- Boy Scouts earning their Eagle Scout Badge to help us build drop traps and shelters.
- Donations of food and Have-a-Heart live traps
